Dear World,
Apologies again for being absent. This quarter has by far been the worst. I'm doing this reading for one of my classes right now, and I've literally just come to the realization that I've been so ignorant my entire life. But hey, isn't life all about growing? I'm going to make a change. I'll tell you more about this later and hopefully you will learn something new about yourself in the process.
In the mean time, in a study, test subjects were asked to use words that they believe is synonymous with homosexuality. Try not to get too upset. I'm listing this in order by the frequency they were mentioned, with the words most frequently used to describe homosexuality first.
1. Sexually abnormal
2. Perverted
3. Mentally ill
4. Maladjusted
5. Effeminate
6. Lonely
7. Insecure
8. Immoral
9. Repulsive
10. Frustrated
11. Weak minded
12. Lacking self control
13. Sensual
14. Over sexed
15. Dangerous
16. Sinful
17. Sensitive
I don't have time to address this issue at the moment, but I will soon! In the mean time, please tell me how you feel. Leave a comment. The main purpose of this post is for to think about how ,as a group, we can change people's perceptions of us because clearly many people have it all wrong.
Peace and Love,

P.S. I've received a handful of emails requesting a link exchange, I will reply to them soon hopefully. But just know that I'm not ignoring you.

I'm not homosexual, but those are pretty offensive terms. I'm outraged at people's closeted thinking.
Well... that's interessting but to be honest i have a hard time understanding it... wonder how others think about this..
how old is this study and when was it done?
the words are pretty upsetting, but we don't know who participated in the study in terms of their religious/background affiliations.
it's 2010, and people who think like this need a reality slap.
Good post and this enter helped me alot in my college assignement. Thank you as your information.
Interesting, where and when was this study conducted? I need a somewhat bigger context for that study before I can "judge" it. :-P
It's really offensive but I got used to that, cause I live in country where homosexuality is treated really bad, not publicly, but people get scared because of gays and "different" people. You can get abanoned by your friends and all that bullshit I don't want to think about. It's really hard. And for our country the first on that list would be "sick" for homosexuals. That's how the people from here think. I have the impression that they CANNOT understand the term homosexuality.
Here, the people can't even understand that another man or woman can have love feelings toward other person of same sex. And a lot of people are disguesed with the thought of man having anal sex, and I'm talking about this from personal experience while listening to comments toward gay people.
It's so sad to hear that. They are making some gay cliche which is not true. I wonder why?
I also was thinking a lot about this, cause I was raised considering homosexuality abnormal and it was really hard for me to accept myself, first cause I was fighting with the thing that homosexuality is not abnormal and second that I'm not abnormal.
Amiable post and this fill someone in on helped me alot in my college assignement. Thanks you seeking your information.
Not gay myself but have gay friends. Those words are pretty harsh but im sure you would get some harsh words for obese people as well. There is always going to be something... gay, bi, trans, fat, skinny, etc etc. People have a right to be happy end of story! I like how gay is considered sinful... I thought God wants happiness for everyone?
It's natural for society to think of all of the most interesting and news-worthy things first; for any subject. When i think of pregnancy, i think of the octomum. When i think of adoption, i think of in-vitro fertilisation. When i think of celebrities, I think of Michael jackson in an oxygen tank...
The headlines show us all of this stuff that's outrageous and un-boring (If i may). Noone would read the newspaper if it had headlines like "All is well" and "Woman gives birth to healthy baby with much relief" (In an interview with the new mother she was quoted as saying "When i saw his little eyes and fingers, I instantly fell in love!"
Mardi Gras is a great example too. There's plenty of people at Mardi Gras who wear shirts, dress appropriately for the weather are normal looking etc, but don't make the papers. Imagine if the Sydney Star Observer or whatever it's called had a photo of a normal looking man and woman on every page.
I could go on about sexualisation of media but I'll stop)
MAIN POINT
I think being yourself, and being a decent human being who happens to be gay, is the best propaganda ever. All the people you know who know you're gay, will see that there are gay people out there that are "just like us". And when someone they know says "Fags are all sassy bitches who are ruining the planet" they might feel compelled to say "Wait a sec, they're not all like that, I know this guy called Steve, who's a really great guy, and he's gay, but he's totally cool"...
I think it's okay to be partly in-the-scene too. As long as it doesn't consume ones life. It's nice to know other gay people and share experiences. We're trying to create a culture of understanding and love, and unfortunately, our 'tribal elders' mostly come from a generation where thier inner resonating sexuality was shunned.
My greatest hope is that when I'm in my fifties, me and my other gay contemporaries will be pillars of strength for the next generations of gay people. I want us to be figures they can look up to and strive to be accepting of themselves without disregaridng their moral fabric.
Again I digress...
With Compassion and Integrity

But for all I bring about this area selling them for half price. I really love those gucci sneakers. I will probably purchase them. what is your opinion?
good evening dudes. I'm really into shoes and I have been digging allowing for regarding that exact model. The prices seeking the boots were about 300 bucks on every site. But finally I set this site selling them as a remedy for half price. I absolutely love those gucci sneakers. I will definetly buy those. what is your opinion?

Approvingly your article helped me very much in my college assignment. Hats off to you send, wish look forward for the duration of more interrelated articles soon as its sole of my choice topic to read.
Harsh words, still have the power to sting. It's hard to see when things change, attitudes do, slowly, bit by bit, day by day.
Just being kind to someone, someone perhaps not so kind, is a way to start.
very good, very very good!
These words are nothing new, homosexuality is treated as a abnormality, whether its society or religion its viewed as evil.
The concept of homosexuality by most conservative nations and individual is that its flaunted and exposed in a perverse way. Sexuality in any form is no longer a taboo subject, i havnt come across much of these views, although im not gay and come from a society which neither condemns or lavishes affection toward homosexuality it seems there is a constant battle for acceptance instead of just ignoring mainstream society and just focusing on representing yourself
I think the term homosexuality should be termed brave, creative, intelligent and kind. My opinion might differ from others but that's just how I feel about it. :]
But homosexuals are definitely sensitive to the core. Those who are 'straight' won't understand at all how they struggle. Straights mock and judge them easily because they simply don't understand homosexuality! I won't get in touch with religions because it's just complicates the matters.
Be positive. :)
wow spam much? (above comments)
Stumbled upon your blog and read this post. R U sure that study isn't from the 1950's or maybe a backwoods snakehandling religious group? I'm hetro and the first word that comes to my mind for homosexuality is NATURAL. I would be ashamed if anyone I know used those words.
Peace.
Someone recently reminded me of some old lyrics from a song. I think it fits this (and many) circumstances.
"You can't please everyone so you got to please yourself".
Yeah, well the test subjects can go fuck themselves. Must have caught them coming out of a fundamentalist church or tea party meeting. Every one of those terms can be applied to a lot of heterosexuals. Most homosexuals are more moral and have more empathy than most heteros I know. I'm an old gay guy and I grew up hearing sex was dirty and frankly I have had enough of this hypocracy today. - Wayne
Ya will if two people can find a little happiness in this fucked up world all the power to them.
Those that left the descriptions need to;)
This makes me 10 - frustrated, and if im not careful i may 12 lack some self control and kick their butts!
VISIT ME AT LITTLE RAZZI
hey man,
Ignore surveys and opinions on how gay folks are perceived- Your happiness can and should be controlled only by you - Let nobody in this world make you feel bad or ashamed for who you are. If you are a good soul and don't think/cause harm to anybody, then why pay heed to what the ignorant world thinks? Learn to love yourself for who you are and strive to be a good human being. You are really young and you SHOULD NOT ever feel low and miserable because of some ignorant jerks.
Straight people have always had the freedom to express love and emotions out in the open with no fear of guilt and shame. Because gay people are a relative minority, they hold these feelings suppressed and find vent through watching porn or hookups and cannot come out due to lack of trust or fear of hurting loved ones. So they may be wrongly perceived as lonely/over-sexed blah blah.. If only every straight person would sit back and think - what if I was born gay - would I sill say those horrible things? I really wish that everyone in the world would introspect more and judge their life instead of always commenting on others. But I guess that would be an ideal world..
Hang in there and don't ever feel low because of what others think or say.. Keep busy and take pleasure in small things like pets or travel or food.. Pick up hobbies and do stuff that cheers you up..
I would have failed the test, because I can not think of any words that are synonymous? I find the terms Homosexual, Heterosexual, Bisexual and Asexual, to be self explanitory without the need for synonyms.
The most of the words on the test list in my opinion should be offensive to anyone of any orientation.
Many of the most brilliant minds in our history belonged to "homosexuals", and I'm proud to be in their company!
If we feel guilty, then it means that the Crabby Appletons of the world have brainwashed us well and will rejoice.
As for the perceptions of others--that's not where we start. When we can feel worthy and love ourselves, our self-perception will ripple out, and THEN it will affect others. Start from within.
I have a different list for homosexuality: 1. intriguing 2. Well-rounded 3. Witty 4. Fun 5. Chic 6. Together 7. Humorous 8. Lightened-up 9. Secure 10. Sentient 11. Serious 12. Interesting 13. Sexually free 14. Mentally apt 15. Understanding 16. Cool 17. Tolerant
